At Manor Park Infant and Nursery School, we believe that Music is a subject that should be enjoyed by, and accessible to all children. Music surrounds children in their everyday lives and our music curriculum aims to provide all children with a high-quality music education which engages and inspires them to develop a life-long love of music, increases their self-confidence, creativity, and imagination, and provides opportunities for self-expression and a sense of personal achievement. Through our inclusive approach, we offer opportunities for all children to develop their talents in all aspects of music education, including composition, singing and music appreciation.
The intention is first and foremost to help children to feel that they are musical, and to develop a life-long love of music.
Through exploration of the inter-related dimensions of music: performing, listening, composing, the history of music, we focus on developing the skills, knowledge and understanding that children need in order to become confident performers, composers, and listeners. Children are given the opportunity to develop the musical skills of singing, playing tuned and un-tuned instruments, improvising and composing music, and listening and responding to music.
Music is a unique way of communicating that can inspire and motivate children. It is a vehicle for individual expression, and it can play an important role in their personal development. Music can reflect the culture and society that we live in or come from, and the teaching and learning of music enables students to learn more about the world we live in. Music can play an important role in helping students feel part of a community. We provide opportunities for all to create, play, perform and enjoy music; to develop the skills to appreciate a wide variety of musical forms, and to develop the confidence to make informed judgements about music.
Through music, our curriculum helps children develop transferable skills such as team-working, leadership, creative thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, and presentation and performance skills. These skills are vital to children’s development as learners and have a wider application in their general lives outside and beyond school.
